As recent graduate Gerard Oray shares about his late mother, Tawanda Williams, his eyes brighten and a sense of pride fills his words. Williams passed away due to breast cancer in 2018 after previously beating the disease a few years earlier, in 2015. She was a woman of great character, determination, and with a heart for others and her stories live on through her son, as does her service to the community. Oray is thankful for the person she was to those around her and for the mother she was to him. He now lives every day to honor her as he looks to serve young people God places in his path. Graduating from Grace Christian University with a degree in Business this spring was another step in following in his mother's footsteps. "Mom always worked with kids in her community through the schools or the local church. She worked with the local Boys and Girls Club chapter and also worked for Project Lift as she was always looking to impact the younger generation coming up." Williams set a foundation for her son by first earning a degree in Business, and using that knowledge to strengthen communities. "My goal is to continue my mom's legacy as I hope to one day operate and lead a Boys and Girls Club," Oray shared. With the Boys and Girls Club as the long-term plan, Gerard is already continuing his mom's good work by leaning into the youth in his community. The amount of young people Gerard Oray has worked with in the past few years is impressive. Whether it was coaching middle school basketball at Calvin Christian School, serving as a recess monitor at Grandville Christian Elementary or coaching at Grand River Preparatory Academy, it is obvious Oray loves the younger generation. Most recently "Coach G" was asked to assist the Grand Rapids Union Varsity Basketball team as they finished their season. Oray continues to encourage and develop young people through mentoring and investing his time, modeling success and the promise that they can follow their dreams. "Coach G" has accepted a position through the West Michigan Drive AAU basketball team, where he will be coaching 15 and 16 year olds. He is excited to have student athletes on his team from Grand Rapids Union, Ottawa Hills, Kentwood, Forest Hills Northern as well as athletes from the homeschool community. His efforts to bring these athletes together comes with intention. "I am passionate about building a special team made up of athletes from many different cultures" he shares. "Our team will be prepared for the real world through the process of winning and losing with one another." Built earlier this spring, the team has already been holding practices and Oray sees their promise. "It has been great to see them accept each other as they are willing to hold one another to high standards of conduct - on and off the court. This is going to be a special group." While he is no stranger to hardships he knows there are lessons learned that are to be shared with others. "The hard things I have gone through will help me to walk alongside my students as we do life together. My mother led by example and it is important for me to lead openly as well," he shared as he spoke of his opportunity to lean into the next generation. "My goal is always to instill confidence, create accountability, and to build respect and integrity." The future is bright for Gerard Oray, and those he is leading, as he continues to guide youth with the love and commitment learned from his mother. He lives out her goal regularly as he builds character and determination in his service to those following his lead. Our world is better because of graduates like Gerard Oray. While there are many, many community members who are thankful for his heart and efforts, it is the joy his mother most certainly feels while watching from above that Oray seeks daily.

Savanah Pfaff, daughter of Frank and Andrea Pfaff, has always known a profession in counseling was in her future. Uncertain of the field in which she would specialize, Pfaff explored various areas throughout her studies. Abnormal Psychology, Counseling Seminar, and similar coursework offered by Dr. Scott Shaw, allowed her to delve into new and unique areas of Counseling as a career. Pfaff came to Grace Christian with the support of her family. "My family has always been very supportive of me attending a Christian university to receive a Psychology degree with a Christian worldview." Physiological Psychology, taught by Professor Dawn Rogers-Defauw, brought to light the extreme need of Grief Therapy. Over time Pfaff saw senior students volunteer and intern for a local non-profit named "Starlight Ministries." Located in Hudsonville, Starlight's mission is to be a place "where hope outshines grief." Combining her coursework, mentorship from professors, and opportunities provided by Starlight Ministries, Pfaff's states "it was meant to be". Her time walking with those who are grieving the loss of loved ones to suicide has given Pfaff "a passion to walk with those who are grieving the loss of a loved one and this is a path I definitely feel called to." "At Starlight Ministries, we really try to talk about death in a straight forward but loving way, to assist people in navigating through their feelings and emotions within group settings" stated Pfaff. This free service offered to people of all ages has a yearly budget built upon fundraised dollars. Currently, Pfaff is working with grief groups ages Pre K- Third grade, but is developing a young adult support group for ages 18-25 with the hopes of groups starting in 2022. Director of Programming for Starlight Ministries, Stephanie Hogan, shared "Starlight Ministries has been blessed to have Savanah as an intern these past several months. Savanah is passionate about helping people and has a heart for shining God's hope into the lives of hurting people. She is a hard worker, go getter, and never shies away from a new experience even when it feels daunting. Savanah has been a true joy to work with!" Every support group is permeated with the Bible, "To see the change in people as they come to a place where they are understood is so powerful. We are able to listen and present the hope of God and the eternal life that is given to each of us." Joyful moments for Pfaff come in seeing healing begin, "This one little girl came to our group but was very quiet at first. After about six weeks she started to open up and eventually became the ringleader of the group, helping others to feel comfortable. She knew she was not alone in her grief and has now taken on a leadership role where she is helping others just like her. I went to help people but whenever I serve someone they actually help me to learn just as much, if not more, about the value of our stories and how we navigate feelings. Helping children work through their grief while learning about the Bible has been so enlightening and refreshing. My hope is that the work God has called me to do will rub off on the kids I walk alongside, so that they may grow up and serve others as well." Savanah Pfaff will graduate next month with a Bachelors in Psychology with a hope to work toward graduate studies soon after. Ms. Pfaff is finishing her internship by "leading through developing programs of grief support, while fulfilling one on one support as well." Always reflective of her time at Grace Christian University, Pfaff states that a goal is to "bring more grief support programs back to Grace Christian one day after I graduate." After her time here, Pfaff will seek full-time roles as a Children's Grief Counselor. Grace Christian University wishes Savanah Pfaff great success in her future as she finishes her degree this spring and launches into the world prepared to serve Christ in church and society. When Merly Velasquez-Ortis shows up for her internship, she never knows the array of questions she will find upon answering the phone. Yet she does so with compassion for her community members in distress, and is grateful for the honor of navigating challenges with them. Daughter of Abelina Ortiz and Eliseo Velasquez, Merly is fulfilling an internship with the Grand Rapids Police Department as a student with Junior standing at Grace Christian University, located in Wyoming, MI. Merly is not only the sole daughter of five children in her family, she is also the only family member in law enforcement. "We do everything together as a family and they are very supportive of my chosen profession," Velasquez-Ortiz stated when asked about their feelings. An open mind and willing heart drove Velasquez-Ortiz to pursue a career in law enforcement. "During and after high school, nothing seemed to fit for my future until I took Introduction to Criminal Justice at Grace Christian University. In that class I found out about the internship with the Grand Rapids Police Department and the path that can be offered through their program. I was hooked after that," said Velasquez-Ortiz. Merly is able to serve as an intern with GRPD, located in Grand Rapids, and as a team member who answers non-emergency calls for the department. Her tasks also include taking larceny reports from the public and updating the sex offender registry, among other tasks. When asked about what fills her with joy from this internship, she knew just how to answer, "I think being bilingual has really opened up opportunities to assist detectives by serving as an in-house translator for them as we serve people that come to us. I was honored to be able to be the actual voice for a shooting victim who was sharing the story of what happened as I translated for him. Being able to connect with him in the moment was special and will shape my future in the field of police work." When asked about her future in this profession, Merly Velasquez-Ortis was excited to share her goal of a Graduate degree in Criminal Justice. She is exploring the Grand Rapids Police Department sponsorship program, which contributes funds for the Police Academy and further training. While enrolled at Grace Christian University Merly continues to grow academically and spiritually, while pursuing the many career opportunities available to her. The School of Social Sciences and Human Services at Grace Christian University, led by Dr. Scott Shaw, Phd., D. Min provides a variety of degree options rooted in a biblical core. On Campus or 100% Online programs allow students like Merly to seek and pursue their calling in a format convenient for their life.

Shari Vanden Berg, daughter of Jim and Terri Vanden Berg of Door, MI started attending Grace Christian University as a Psychology major with the desire to work with children. Over time she changed her degree to Human Services with an emphasis in Criminal Justice and her focus on comunity service grew. "After meeting with and taking a class with Dr. David Greydanus I felt like God started opening doors for this path and they continue to open." Vanden Berg went on to share that her Criminal Justice elective classes entitled "Introduction to Legal Studies" and "Sex Crime: Investigation, Trauma and Psychosocial Implications" continued to foster a great interest in serving her community through police work. "One of the greatest things I have drawn from the classes offered at Grace are how God can use me to serve people," says Vanden Berg. Through Grace Christian University's partnership with the Wyoming Police Department, Vanden Berg has secured an internship as a cadet. Her internship experiences have involved helping others with what they need at the local, county, state and federal levels. When asked if she felt prepared for this role, she pointed to the valuable learning experiences through mission trips that shaped her listening skills with her local church, First Byron Christian Reformed Church, located in the nearby community of Byron Center. Vanden Berg lights up when speaking about her future in police work, "I love being part of people's lives as there will never not be someone to help. When people deal with police it's usually the worst day of their lives and I am excited to be a person to step into that space with them." While Vanden Berg will be graduating in May of 2023, she has goals of working in a local police department after graduation with visions of someday serving in an investigations unit of a state level police department. As Shari reflected on her path to this point she mentioned that "This is the calling where God has placed me and I will follow Him through it all." Grace Christian University is thankful for Shari Vanden Berg and others like her working to graduate as a godly individual prepared to serve Christ in church and society.

Coach Colton Wolfe is entering this year full of hope and expectation. Wolfe is the head coach for the Grace Christian University baseball team, a new athletic offering for the school. Tigers baseball has 40 games on the schedule, uniforms and practice gear ordered, players recruited, and staff in place. With the support of assistant coaches Kyle Peets and Jamie Bristol, Wolfe is excited to not just lead the team but also serve the community in various ways. Prior to the invitation to coach the Tigers, Wolfe played baseball for Calvin University where he majored in Sports Management. At Cairn University, where he earned his MA in Organizational Leadership, Wolfe simultaneously served as Assistant Coach to the team. A short break between his Undergraduate and Graduate studies allowed Wolfe the opportunity to play independent ball in New Mexico. His return to Michigan began with a position for Springhill Camps during the summer. Shortly thereafter he was hired as a full-time Online Enrollment Advisor for Grace Christian University. Aligning the perfect path as only God can do, Wolfe's coaching opportunity was brought about by a casual conversation during a campus service opportunity. "It was really amazing. I came to campus for a blood drive where I met Coach (Gary) Bailey. He shared with me his familiarity with my athletic background which began the discussion leading to a coaching opportunity. Beginning the first week of April, I was officially the head coach for the team. It was definitely God's doing" says Wolfe. Still working full-time to enroll students into the Online program, he has done and continues to do an incredible amount of preparation for this first season ahead. This will be a year of learning, growing, and planting a firm foundation for not only the school but also the players. "We have many freshmen on the team this year. My goal is to serve this team with excellence, and to glorify God with the sport of baseball."

"Brave" is a common characteristic found among Grace Christian students; whether it is serving the mission field, staying strong in their faith when challenged, or simply moving to campus without the comfort of familiar faces. For Chris Smith, C/O 2021, this is no exception. In 2004 Smith attended a Christian camp where a coach helped to change his life. This experience deepened his faith and after the encounter, he felt called to serve at this same camp as a counselor. Once again, a life-changing experience brought him closer to Christ and solidified his desire to enter youth ministry. "I met a kid at camp who really didn't want to be there. By the time it ended he cried because he didn't want to leave. Pouring into him and allowing him to share his story made a big impact", Smith shared. Between high school and college, uncertain of the specific path to take, Smith joined the United States Navy where he was stationed in San Diego. After a deployment to the UAE area and four years serving our country, he decided to return to Michigan and see where God would call him next. Connecting with a friend while volunteering planted the seed in Smith to relocate to the Grand Rapids area from his original hometown, and it was here that he became familiar with Grace Christian University. "I visited Grace and applied for the Youth Ministry program. Once accepted, I moved to campus where I began forming connections at the start of Orientation." Aside from serving others there was another passion he hoped to pursue while living on campus, and in the summer of 2017, he worked hard to make this path possible. "I worked out hard that summer, and as fall began I earned a place on the Grace Tigers basketball team. I served other sports as well, like soccer and volleyball, in different capacities such as scorekeeping and transporting equipment. My senior year I was captain of the basketball team." His learning did not stop once crossing the stage with his bachelor's degree. Smith entered the Master of Arts in Organizational Leadership program before completing his undergraduate studies and is currently completing his final course. He has accepted a Director position with the FCA, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, and in his role will be engaging in outreach events and connected with coaches from other FCA institutions. He recently returned from Kansas for his training in this role and was welcomed back with two more exciting offers. He has been hired as the Head Coach for the Elkton-Pigeon-Bay-Port High School Boys' Varsity Soccer Team and will be coaching their Girls' Junior Varsity Basketball Team. Smith is eager to embrace these leadership roles where he will most certainly impact many lives. Though his path to college was uncertain, his commitment to Christ was not. He bravely followed his call to serve both country and community and is departing Grace Christian with undergraduate and graduate degrees, and two careers in place.

To those who have completed their studies at Grace Christian University, last weekend was a celebration of hard work and dedication. Unlike the virtual ceremony required last year, Grace Christian celebrated in person, with an outdoor ceremony in lieu of the traditional indoor location. In a trying year, these students found educators who not only instilled knowledge, but also prayed for them as they persisted in the midst of a pandemic. Each graduate has overcome moments of adversity throughout their academic journey, and their resilience is something of which they should feel proud. Never before did an academic year consist of so much change, yet they rose to the challenge and adapted with each new requirement, shift, or canceled plan. Congratulations to our On Campus graduates, and to all graduates in our Online Undergraduate and Graduate programs. May God bless you as He takes you forward to serve the world.

Recent graduate Emily Rodriguez is experiencing a moment when life comes full circle. As a child growing up in Indiana, she was blessed to attend a school that provided additional support for students of diverse backgrounds. Instruction in English when coming from a predominantly Spanish speaking home can come with unique challenges, and this was the circumstance for Emily. Aides in the classroom helped her overcome these difficulties and achieve success. The important role these educators played in the life of Rodriguez served as a strong foundation and is fueling a passion to do the same for others. After high school, Rodriguez sought to study Music at a Christian college. This interest brought her to the campus of Grace Christian University where she spent two years in the Music, Worship, and Technology program. Midway through her studies, she felt led to missions and outreach and transitioned to Global Communication, the program in which she earned her degree. Rodriguez took advantage of various student opportunities, in addition to her academic studies, and was a well-known and respected figure. Her role as a Resident Advisor to female students showed her strength as a leader, and in her final year she accepted a position as a Community Life Intern to serve her community in a larger capacity. Loving others is something she does well, and with a gentle heart and bold spirit, she is entering a different type of classroom this fall. After completing her degree, she entertained a few choices for relocation. Her heart called her back home and an internet search led to an employment application at her childhood school. Within hours she was invited to interview and shortly thereafter learned her mission field would be her hometown. The offer to come back to where her education began as a child was a surprise, though she knows it is exactly what God designed for her at this stage of life. "I want these kids to feel empowered and to increase their knowledge. Regardless of the language they speak or how they are viewed by others, they are capable. I am one of the few who got to go to college, who had a chance to study anything higher than a high school diploma" Rodriguez shared. She hopes these children see in her the possibility of reaching for goals beyond what they have ever seen. As a first-generation college student, her perseverance and success is important because it allows her to help support her mom who sacrificed so much for her. "She overcame so much for me to have the opportunities I do, and now I want to be able to be there for her." Grace Christian University is excited to announce a new Online Bilingual Associate of Arts in Social Science degree that is currently enrolling students.

In a year where "distance" was mentioned more often than anyone wished to hear, Grace Christian University students celebrated unity as they were able to once again serve off campus as one body. Director of Field Operations for Grace Ministries International (www.gracem.org) Don Ten Hoeve, recently joined a group of Grace Christian students as they served in Puerto Rico. The gift of serving together, off-campus, was a long-awaited blessing. The group was led by student Justin McMaster, who shares thoughts from this experience. "Our week in Puerto Rico started with a long day of travel. Day 1 consisted of eating DELICIOUS food and getting acclimated to our living situation at Camp Caribe. The next morning, we went to church at Iglesia Biblica de Juana Diaz, where Pastor Jose Juan preached about unity within the body of Christ. His message set the tone for the week, as we would eventually find out that unity is important for any team to be successful. This same day we also went cliff jumping in the rainforest. Monday we started work; first at a sheep farm on the west side of the island in the city of Sabana Grande, next at Camp Caribe. On the farm we cleaned stables, worked with the animals and clipped their hooves and built fences. Camp Caribe involved scraping paint, cleaning buildings, painting and yard work. One highlight was the quality time spent with the owner of the farm, Pastor Leonard Torres. Pastor Leonard (Leo) explained to us how our team was such a blessing to his farm, and our help came at just the right time for him. God clearly had a hand in guiding us to his farm to serve them. We went to the tropical rainforest on the east side of the island where we spent the day cliff jumping, rope swinging, and swimming in the crystal-clear water. In the capital city of San Juan we tried delicious coffee and went sightseeing. Friday we attended youth group at the church in Juana Diaz and made lasting relationships with the kids there. The week was tough both physically and emotionally for everyone. The theme of "unity" helped guide us through the week and by the end of the trip, all 13 members of our team became close like a family. The biggest takeaway from the trip was the fact that each person was pushed to the edge of comfortability, whether it was during daily devotions, working through the extreme heat, or persevering through the mental exhaustion of a week's worth of ministry and manual labor. We watched our teammates during cliff jumping off a 40-foot cliff, and this image reminded us of our walk with Christ - sometimes we hesitate to take that leap of faith. We need to be obedient and take the leap by giving our life to Him." Grace Christian University student groups have often traveled with Grace Ministry International leaders, though this became impossible due to travel restrictions and the importance of overall campus safety remaining a top priority. Uniting to serve others is foundational for these organizations, and reengaging in this way brings much excitement of things to come.

Tradition remained on the campus of Grace Christian University as soon-to-be alums hosted the annual Senior Chapel. For those following in their footsteps this means advice, encouragement, and a glimpse of what is to come from upperclassman.

Kimberly Proctor, Grace Christian University Senior, has become the first ever Track & Field National Champion in the 5K, winning by 26 seconds over the next closest competitor. Less than 48 hours prior, Proctor became the first ever NCCAA All-American national runner up in the 10K for the university, with another record-breaking personal best. Before these National wins, Proctor ran a personal best at GVSU for the 5K. Teammate Sarena Overbeek finished the 10K with an amazing personal best, shaving off two minutes from an already incredible finish time. Kimberly Proctor was the first ever automatic qualifier from Grace Christian University's Track & Field for the NCCAA Outdoor Track & Field Nationals during her freshman year. Doing so again this year, she accomplished this alongside Overbeek, who was the third university athlete to qualify. These athletes not only have to succeed during the season as a D2 school, they also are required to meet the standards of D1 athletes in order to qualify for Nationals - which is a significant accomplishment. Leading up to this strong finish for the women's team, April Invitationals included Senior Nat Mercer breaking both shot put and hammer throw records. Men's events at this same competition resulted in freshmen Kent Herring and Angel Rangel shattering personal records for the 1500m (Herring) and shot put and discus (Rangel). Herring previously broke the 800M school record. Spring showcased amazing Track & Field and Cross Country athleticism but this success does not stand alone. Amiah Lake was the first ever Tiger to finish the Women's Tennis season undefeated in singles. Lake also shines on the field as a successful player for the Tigers Women's Soccer team. This year the university had their first ever Decathlete, Senior Joseph Craesmeyer, who finished 9th overall in the NCCAA Championships. Craesmeyer, along with classmates Nat Mercer and Kimberly Proctor were also named NCCAA's Scholar Athletes. Grace Christian University Women's Basketball achieved success this spring with a regional championship as well as an appearance in the NCCAA Final Four. Coach Ashley Xiong Vang officially assumed the role of Head Coach for the Women's team this year, replacing the "interim" title she held for a brief time following more than two years as the teams' assistant coach. Vang has been busy signing some strong incoming athletes for the class of 2021 and is eager to see their contributions. Character along with competence is shared throughout the season with Mindset Student-Athlete of the Month recognition. Freshman Kent Herring (Track & Field) and Senior Mikyala Reynolds (Tennis) were applauded for their leadership and dedication to their teammates. Reynolds serves as Team Captain and is a leader in student government On Campus as well as in her church community. Athletes at Grace Christian spend time throughout the season volunteering at athletic events with high schools in the community. Each athlete at Grace Christian University seeks to serve others and show the love of Christ in their community while remaining committed to their teams and academic pursuits.

Recently recognized as Best Online Bachelor Degree in Business by study.com, the School of Business at Grace Christian University offers two-year, four-year, and graduate degrees in flexible formats. This premier recognition was closely followed by the Online Bachelor in Human Services and Online Master in Ministry, both of which ranked #2 by study.com and intelligent.com respectively. Malachi Merrell is an On Campus student in the School of Business at Grace. He is active as a member of the track team, is the head of the student Wellness Committee, and is a student employee. Malachi has used his social media skills as a staff member at About You Counseling & Consulting as well as on campus with a campus wide staff video initiative. He is currently a volunteer with Kids Food Basket, co-leader for a student initiative named Defeating Mental Health, and has been recognized as Sales Associate of the Quarter at a local clothing store. His service extends beyond the walls of campus and into the community as a volunteer with One Wyoming One on One Mentoring Program.

Criminal Justice is a popular choice for many Grace Christian University students. Online and On Campus, those called to a career in law enforcement, or seeking to impact the criminal justice system, are met with experienced professors who have served as officers and counselors. Jose Reyes Flores and Lucas Postma share their experiences and goals for a career with the local and state police as they near the end of their studies.

Committed to serving their local community, Grace Christian University students and staff continue to build relationships and serve those in close proximity to the campus. Through blood drives, service days, and other initiatives, Grace seeks ways to support the wonderful community surrounding our campus.

As we reflect on our first semester in an unprecedented time, we praise God for the health and success of our athletes and coaches. Their perseverance and commitment to athleticism and sportsmanship has resulted in Regional and National recognition for individual athletes, teams, and Head Basketball Coach Gary Bailey as he is inducted into the NCCAA Hall of Fame.

Grace Christian University Men's Basketball caps off Kentucky trip with a win following a season pause, as the schools athletic teams continue to achieve success in a changing time.

As COVID-19 continues to cast shadows over the future of performing arts, a bright spot shines through inside the basement of the Master Arts Theater building where the Octavo Singers gather to defy the odds. The small community ensemble formed this Summer during a time of uncertainty, donning masks and sitting six feet apart while learning arrangements of Christmas carols. As the end of October drew near, the group finally had its first glimpse at each other's faces as they recorded their first track together.

While study abroad opportunities have always been plentiful, changing dynamics in health and travel have limited these options in recent months. Students remain hopeful for a future involving cross-cultural service and continue to prepare for this work through new course offerings in Global Communication.

The Grace Christian University women's basketball team enjoyed a successful weekend in the win column, defeating Welch College on back-to-back occasions Friday night and Saturday morning. The wins move the Tigers to 2-0 on the year in the NCCAA DII and 2-3 overall. They are right back in action tonight at the Aldrich Athletic Center, taking on Cornerstone University at 7:00 pm.

The coaching staff for each Grace Tigers team knows that if they desire to reflect Jesus Christ, the first step is having a selfless mindset. Our talented student-athletes model servant leadership, a commitment to their teammate's wellbeing, excellent athleticism, and true love of encouraging the success of others. Each day student-athletes are challenged to wake up with a selfless mindset, and some have been recognized this fall for their "Mindset" commitment.

The School of Music, Worship, and Technology at Grace Christian University offers the most up-to-date technology with an emphasis on equipping students as multi-faceted artists who excel and share their passions to glorify God. Here are some current students and alumnis, sharing their excitement for the work they are doing. As a senior here at Grace Christian University, Ililo Bissee recently celebrated his senior program. "I never thought I would make it this far to my senior year, especially looking back to where I came from about 10 years ago being adopted in the US. It is by the Grace of God that I get this opportunity to celebrate with gratitude in light of what God has done for me in my lifetime" Bissee shared. Current student Carolann Flood understands the importance of music as a way to knit people together. "Even if people are completely different, there is something about music that knits us together. I knew I needed a school with a solid worship program, and Grace was one of the best. I felt God leading me here and have been learning a lot through various worship opportunities that have been offered to me. The required internship, private lessons, and being forced out of my comfort zone has given me the opportunity to be intentional about taking the reins on my learning experience. It has been very exciting learning new things and stewarding the gifts that God has so graciously given me." Tommee Profitt, award winning producer and Grace Alum, shares with Dr. Werkema, "We are so thankful to Grace Christian University and all that it has done for us. You personally, the Worship Arts program, and the entire college has changed my life and opened doors that I never dreamed of. And I think about this often." Jason Werkema, Ph.D., is excited to welcome new students to the recently upgraded Music, Worship, and Technology program. Recording studios are available for student use regularly;, iMac labs, top of the line mics and preamps, and successful fund raising for Baker Chapel renovations are just a few of the things that help talented students explore their gifts. Christopher Cornell Jr., 2016 graduate of the Music, Worship, and Technology program, serves as the Dean of Biblical Studies & Instructor at Plymouth Christian Academy in Canton, MI. His undergraduate degree here at Grace served as a catalyst to entering and graduating from seminary with honors. Cornell formed a bond with Dr. Phil Long, who believed in him despite his lack of knowledge and experience. "Dr. Long inspired me because like myself, he came from humble beginnings without a Dean's or President's list GPA, yet God has called us both to pursue transformational knowledge and to share it with others." Through a changing time, MWT students and alumni continue to share their gifts with the community through outdoor worship services, virtual chapels, and recorded performances. More than ever, technology is connecting communities, and the students st Grace Christian University are learning each day how to use this resource to serve others well.

The distinctive experience of college students this semester is certainly not without challenges, but Grace Christian University continues to press on and choose faith over fear in the midst of this season. Grace's continual commitment to students includes "daily temperature checks, regular deep sanitization, barriers and seating distribution, protocols for food and beverage service, housing, and classroom attendance to give students the assurance that we care for them", says President Ken Kemper. Kemper shares, "Students are absolutely thrilled to be on campus and in a safe learning community which includes adjusted class sizes and locations. The spiritual nature and instruction of our students is so much richer in-person for most of these young adults than is possible online. Student enthusiasm is strong and faculty and staff morale is high as we succeed in this challenging start to an important school year. We have so much for which to be thankful." Athletic teams continue their pattern of success as a "new normal" exists for practices and games. Women's Volleyball coach, Kerri Shultz, shares her thoughts on this 'special season ahead' saying, "This season is going to be a little different with having to work around different restrictions. We, above all else, are grateful to be playing together, and I want that to fuel our passion for this season." Players Tori Johnston, Ashley Hoek, Megan Postma, Dani Tanner, Kenna Grant, and Abby Summerfield were instrumental in the 2020 season opener victories. Thankful to be together as a community, these athletes continue to press on. Community is an essential part of our campus culture, and recent graduate Paige Emery has experienced this first-hand. Paige is a Grace employee, along with her husband Brock, and she is currently earning a second bachelor's degree in Grace's online program. As such, their impact on the community is incredible. "I learned that community is present wherever you create it, no matter how big or small the space is. You cultivate community in the way you treat others and make time for them. God created us to be relational, and you cannot have community without authentic relationships. I 'cultivate community' where God has placed me by investing in the lives of those around me." Paige Emery, class of 2019. On Campus courses continue to ensure students are engaged and have access to instruction with streaming and recordings should they find they are unable to engage in person. Chapel services take place in creative ways utilizing outdoor spaces and live streaming while the community continues to thrive. In this time, Grace Christian University continues to provide unique opportunities to support students in pursuing their passion and purpose.

Wyoming, MI - Following a tradition set by the coaching staff in years ago, the 2020-21 men's basketball team enjoyed a night of team bonding during the week leading into the teams first official practice.

Lydia Peters and Kimberly Buskirk, recent graduates of the on campus human services degree program at Grace Christian University, have begun their careers with InterAct. InterAct is dedicated to fostering hope and wellness for those in Michigan suffering from mental illness or substance abuse. Lydia is excited to begin serving her clients as an ACT clinician with "goal-focused treatment designed to help them heal without inpatient services." Kimberly shares the same sentiment, saying she has found an "amazing team and loves the work they do in the community." Kimberly spent time as an intern at the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services as well as at Pine Rest as a psychiatric technician prior to joining InterAct. Keri Chearney, a soon-to-be graduate of the online human services degree program, has always had a passion for helping others. Returning to school as an adult with two teenagers at home did not come without its challenges, but she is grateful to be more fully equipped to share the gospel with others. Keri says, "I have become more confident as a leader in my homeschool community, and understand more in-depth the needs of others. There is such importance in developing relationships and building trust when serving at-risk communities. I plan to continue serving with the Nevada Partnership for Homeless Youth and reaching children in the community who are victims of sex trafficking." The human services students at Grace Christian University feel called to listen to the voices of others and serve where God directs. The chapel theme for the 2020-2021 academic year is Voices - Heard and Unheard, and we are grateful for students like Keri, Lydia, and Kimberly who desire to seek out the voices of others.

Originally created as the Cultural Diversity Student Club, some Grace Christian University students have updated the vision and are now known as WeR1. This collaborative effort led by faculty, staff, students, and alums will intentionally find ways to reach diverse groups. As an advisor to the group, Samaria Reedy engages and supports the efforts of the WeR1 community. Reedy is raising up leaders within the group to facilitate dialogue, engagement, and remain true to the WeR1 mission statement. WeR1 exists "To inspire and create unity in a community of diverse Christians equipping them with the means to bring the message of God to people who are different than them." Samaria is an alum of the Master of Arts in Organizational Leadership program at Grace Christian University and serves the campus formally in her role as the Campus Unity Advocate. Her support of the WeR1 group empowers students like Amiah Lake to be a catalyst for change. "I joined this council because I, as well as the council members alongside me, wish to create a community that has each other's backs and shows up to sporting events with the entire study body in the stands cheering on our classmates. We are open to any student who shares our vision and passion. College is the perfect atmosphere and space to push boundaries, learn about other cultures, and begin to break the stereotypes society has created surrounding the subject of race." Lake is working alongside others in the Grace community like Mikyala Reynolds, a student athlete who is passionate about serving others in various capacities. Together these students will encourage conversations and intentionally step out of their comfort zones as they learn about cultures within their university community. "We will be graduating a new generation of brave Christians equipped with the means to break down walls and spread the Gospel with a new level of confidence" says Lake.

Grace Christian University exists to prepare students to serve Christ through church and society. This preparation begins with student orientation and continues even now, as students navigate their studies remotely. We give thanks for their hearts of service as they minister to many, both outside and inside of the institution. Senior Kimberly Buskirk is serving in the field of mental healthcare while simultaneously completing her degree and planning the next steps for her marriage and career. Senior Ashley Glass is serving in an assisted living facility, where she continues to balance the demands of full-time commitments to both work and her studies. Senior Adam Kregel was awarded the Pete Maravich Award by the NCCAA for being the most outstanding civic-minded, ministry-focused student athlete in the entire men's league. The Women's Volleyball team was recently recognized as an NCCAA Scholar Team for their academic achievements. Player Dana DuChemin shares her reasons behind continuing to support her teammates in a virtual environment: "I strive to have a positive attitude and impact on those around me, especially my teammates. Sports, especially volleyball, are very important to me and are something I'm passionate about, but I'm also passionate about academics and always doing my best. Doing well in school doesn't just affect me, but also my team. I try to encourage my teammates to do their best in this area as well. I love my team, and I am so blessed to have them as my teammates and best friends" Grace Christian University online students also provide critical support in this challenging time, some serving on the front-lines in heavily impacted places such as hospitals in the Detroit metro area. "As a support person working at the hospital, it is comforting knowing that I am a person standing in the gap praying for, not only for the patient but also for my team members. We are going into patient rooms refusing PPE to take care of those who are vulnerable" Sharon Turrentine, 2020 graduate. These students are ministering to the vulnerable during a challenging time and have remained committed to the University's mission of serving Christ through church and society.

Spectrum Hospital's security team opened its doors with a unique look inside their daily responsibilities to the students in Grace Christian University's Criminal Justice 380 class. On Tuesday, February 25, Security Team Captain Mr. Brad Estep, provided a tour of the facility and discussed the importance of maintaining security at a large metropolitan hospital. This opportunity allowed students to see firsthand job opportunities available to individuals with criminal justice degrees. Estep shared job opportunities available for those interested in the field of criminal justice and stressed the need for higher education in that line of work. He encouraged the students to consider working for Spectrum Health and reminded them whether short term or long term, anyone working at the hospital would get a great experience and receive training to help them become successful. Highlights of the tour included visiting the top of the hospital where the care flight helicopters land as well as hearing firsthand accounts of the security team in action. Estep recalled an incident involving a woman who struggled with mental health. She attacked him while he was trying to help her. Being a member of the security team, he had the authority to arrest her and take her to jail for the assault. Instead, he chose a compassionate approach and took her to the Emergency Room instead. She was admitted as a patient and doctors were able to stabilize her. Estep called this "a success story." Onsite visits like the Spectrum Health security team tour are invaluable to college students pursuing degrees in any career field. For the past two semesters, Joel Beltman is one of many students who has served at Starlight Ministries. Located in Jenison, Michigan, Starlight is a Christ-centered ministry providing hope, healing, and support for those who are grieving a loss. Starlight Ministries uses the support group model with a Christian perspective. In this atmosphere, the participants often encourage one another as the facilitator guides the direction of the conversation. The ministry provides a weekly dinner for families, and then the participants attend their support groups. While children's groups are divided by age, adult groups are formed with consideration given to the circumstances surrounding the death they are mourning. Joel, currently a junior at Grace Christian University, facilitates for the middle school group. Each of the youth groups has a male and a female facilitator. This is something Joel never would have imagined doing a year ago. In spite of his initial reservations about working with youth rather than adults, he feels working with these kids has been a very positive experience. "Joel is an asset to our team. His willingness to jump right in and work with the middle school kids has been a blessing. I especially like how he leads yet does the crafts and projects with them making himself part of the group," says Gwen Kapcia, Director of Program Development. Joel says it brings a smile to his face to observe how God works in each of the children as the unit progresses, seeing God lead them through these unfortunate circumstances. Joel joined Starlight in September 2018, yet he says it feels like it is something he has been doing for a much longer time period. Joel shares that it has been a blast joining the team and hearing about the successes of participants in other groups at their post-session meetings. He hopes to continue volunteering with Starlight, and perhaps he will be able to intern there during his senior year.

Current online students Spencer Kilgore and Zach Gibson recently visited Grace Christian University. Both studying Psychology, Spencer and Zach are passionate about using their degrees to pour back into Adult & Teen Challenge Ohio Valley, an organization that helped them both overcome years of addiction in their youth. Not only are they graduates of this program, but they are also vital employees to the organization. During their visit, Spencer delivered a strong message in Baker Chapel to the on-campus community. He and Zach engaged with students in the classroom, dining hall, common areas, and made themselves available to answer questions about the mission of Adult & Teen Challenge Ohio Valley and the community they serve. This visit is a wonderful example of how collaboration creates opportunities. Because of their organization's partnership with Grace Christian University, Spencer and Zach receive a tuition discount to their online programs and they have the opportunity to share the organization's mission with students. For those studying on campus, this visit introduced them to job opportunities and created connections for internships. As the university continues to prepare students to serve Christ in church and society, hosting on-line students on campus is an important part of partnership development. Upon leaving, both shared how impactful the visit had been for them. Spencer stated "I know I am at the right school. I don't want to leave my new friends".
